Re: Any old iron

Quite a few railway worksplates etc are recessed at the back, possibly to save weight or material or to reduce metal to metal contact and corrosion although this one has a quite fine raised edge. Of particular interest is the higgledy-piggledy arrangement of the letters. Sorry cannot further your pl...

Re: Pug Tender

That wee Engine Tender is an exquisite piece of modelling and weathering Alan. it looks just like the real thing and looks just right to me. Colour has been the bane of many peoples lives for many years. My own take is that if you go down the shops to buy some paint or curtains etc to match the carp...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Hi Jim, Thanks for the reply and info. Yes they wouldnt use dressed sandstone for internal walls as its not seen but I must admit surprise at using sandstone at all for the internal walls. I would have thought brick would have been just as effective and cheaper too. Perhaps it depended on what was l...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Evening all, Attached is a scan plus a detail of an original Trevor Owen, TB Owen slide. It has a handwritten reference ANH21 and the Kodak process date is Apr 67. TBO is a name which many will be familiar with, he was a very prolific and widely travelled photographer. The slide depicts the Harthope...

Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

Hello Jim, Many thanks again for the links and lattice photos. Theres some seriously good work at Copenhagen Fields and that footbridge is absolutely exquisite, I really doubt my soldering ability. Interesting that it comprises two layers, I need to experiment in both mediums and decide what is best...

Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

Hello Jim, Thanks for the advice and suggestion re nickel silver. Again thats a superb piece of modelling, very impressive and really captures the atmosphere. Those buildings are based on Top Shed?? Ive just made a quite lengthy post about the viaduct and my own thoughts and plans. One crucial facto...

Harthope Viaduct

Morning all, I'm thinking a wee bit ahead to the construction of the viaduct itself, still have a replacement block of 2 cottages to construct plus middens and platelayers hut and finish off the block of 4 and the dwelling house. That will be this winter. Never built anything like this before and ce...

Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

Hello again Jim,

Thanks as always for your wisdom and advice. Im afraid my lack of knowledge is really showing through in Tech things, but I think you are right.
I take it we would be talking etched brass here?

Paul.

Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

Thanks Jim, More help than you can possibly imagine. This is going to be quite a mountain for a non-tech brain to climb. Im thinking a fair way ahead to the Harthope Viaduct lattices, Ive got a block of 2 cottages to reconstruct, not too big a job, and just finish off the first 2 as well once we get...

Re the WDs in later life, Ive stumbled over this interesting shot showing one that acquired the yellow diagonal cabstripe prohibiting use south of Crewe under electric overheads, the topfeed being the culprit.

Re: Another Unidentified D&A Location

If indeed taken in BR days, the number 34 is in the correct font and position to be the last 2 digits of a 900xx number. Seven possibilities, all but 90134 are ruled out because of allocation or topfeed although neither are guaranteed. 90134 was a Dunfermline/Glasgow engine all its BR days. Canny fi...

Re: Glasgow City Archives

That was exactly the same response as I achieved when I contacted South Lanarkshire Libraries several years ago, pre-covid, during research for Harthope. Dumfries Library in complete contrast couldny have been more helpful but the boundaries and "ownership" of Harthope changed. One would t...

The seller in the link above dropped the But it now price to £50 but I see that they have reverted to the original price now. Maybe through pressure from Bachmann???

While still not cheap I note TMC has at least some of the Blue/Grey Porthole stock on offer at £68 at the moment, apparently a £12 reduction! They are £79.95 RRP on Bachmanns website but generally available around £68 which is the usual 15% allowed. But Ive noticed the first to break free o...

Re: A74 Harthope Viaduct RTA

Somewhere about 1964/65 I was driving my parent's car, a Ford Anglia, with vacuum operated wipers. in the dark, in the rain...…… up the A74; at the start of the roadworks we got confused, and drove for about 10 miles on the wrong side of the new dual carriageway. We had no problems and eventually m...

Re: CR 812 Class from Rails

Fair comment on both points and one thing is for sure, not many people could replicate the elaborate lining and finish as effectively as the forthcoming CR 828 and my order is eagerly awaited. But at £180 for a basic black loco, it still seems expensive to me and to add sound will leave little chang...
