Relationship between the Caledonian and the Lancashire & Yorkshire

Something with I have often wondered but haven't seen anything written about before is the relationship between the Caledonian and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The L&Y and LNWR were clearly aligned (and eventually amalgamated just before the grouping) but how did the Caley fit in? Some ...

New 3D printed models from Lothian Railway Models

I will shortly be launching my new range of 3D printed models in 4mm and 7mm called Lothian Railway Models. This is something I have been working on for the last couple of years and will cover a range of prototypes including wagons, trams and scenic items. My intention is that my 3D printed Caledoni...

Re: New kit- 1870 Metropolitan Horse Box

Hi Dave I was struggling to find much about the brakes. The drawing in the wagon book (which the model is based on) shows the early condition but presumably they would have at least been trough piped in later years. I have yet to come across a clear photo of one of these horse boxes so can't confirm...

Re: Carriage stock converted into vehicle/motor car carriers

The Lancashire and Yorkshire converted quite a few 6 wheel coaches (mainly brake thirds I think) into covered carriage trucks and aeroplane vans. LYR.jpg The image came from the following article. http://www.lyrs.org.uk/images/uploads/Modelling_-_Aeroplane_Van_in_7mm_scale_-_Magazine_257.pdf Ross

Dalry Road Class 439s

I'm trying to find any information on Class 439 engines allocated to Dalry Road pre-1923. Caledonian Railway Locomotives - The Classic Years and Dalry Road Motive Power Depot, Edinburgh suggest "one or two" and "approximately 3" of the class were to be found in Edinburgh but I ha...

Vacuum fitted goods trains.

There are numerous references to ‘vacuum fitted goods trains’ running on the Caledonian but what exactly were these? Where did they run? What were they carrying? Which company’s wagons were used? Would they have used goods or passenger brake vans? From a modeling point of view I’m trying to understa...

Rapido RTR Wagons in 4mm

Rapido have announced a 4mm RTR Caledonian Railway gunpowder van. It's not a 100% accurate model, but should still be of interest to Caley modellers.
