Re: Loco Lining

I must be spending too much time at work skimming lengthy documents to find the salient content! In the image below the left is 3/16 - 1 3/8 - 3/16 the right is 3/8 - 1 3/8 - 3/8. Both set 2 1/2 " from panel edge. The difference is quite stark although the white does stand out, even as a narrow...

Lindsay, Not from the livery book but I have the HMRS Livery Register. It quotes for Passenger Locomotives 1906-1923; LINING - standard passenger lining i.e. black band 1 3/8” wide edged each side by 3/16” white line quoting ‘D Newlands, A.M.I. Loco.E, personal observations and notes’ and ‘M S Hatch...

Re: Where, What, When

14351 is I think passing Slateford Maltings on the Edinburgh-Carstairs mainline with the carriage sidings/yard in front. Signals are for the Junction towards Murrayfield and the North of Edinburgh past the Caledonian Brewery. The Maltings are still there - converted to flats now but still recognizab...

Lindsay, A quick skim of our photo catalogue and some of my own images provide lots of precendents for you to choose from - but no guidance as to which is right for Barnton... Allan, I think this is at Dalry Road but looking North across the main line towards the back of the buildings in Dundee Street - train heading West toward Merchiston Station- or more accurately South West at this point so could explain the shadows. The distinctive West End Locomotive Works is obscur...

Re: Wordie & Co tarpaulins

Mike,

No mention in the description and the accompanying sketch doesn't show any form of cross on the tarpaulin. Lettering appears to be white - as it definitely is in the colour illustration on the dust jacket of the book which is attached. No diagonal stripe visible in that image either.

In Edward Paget-Tomlinson's history of Wordie & Co "The Railway Carriers" he describes them as a "hap or cover" saying "the hap or cover was heavily treated with linseed oil, giving it a brownish sheen like an oilskin" (pp81). This is in his description of a single-...
