Re: Pig iron loads
I am reminded of the ingots of copper we used to load at Lobito in Angola in my Merchant Navy days nearly 60 years ago. These were about the same size although more evenly shaped and were stacked by hand into the bottom of each cargo hold. We used to carry up to 3,000 tons which was good ballast for...

Re: Moving the trains through Perth
Very interesting and informative. I liked the photos of the goods shed and aerial view. There are good examples of wagon, i.e. lorry, loads. Thanks Jim for your contribution and letting us have access to it.

Re: Adventures in 3D printing
Jim and Ross - I believe Bill Bedford now produces the bodies for his wagon and carriage kits by 3D printing although he must have commercial scale production facilities. However, I guess the time taken is more limited by the nature of the process rather than the equipment. I am still interested to ...

Re: Adventures in 3D printing
Great work Ross. Does this mark the end of cast resin bodies for TLM? Would it be viable in terms of material costs and your time to produce small batches for sale under the TLM banner?

Re: CRA Webinar 6th November 2021 - Blairgowrie
Apologies to all who are now watching my Webinar on Blairgowrie. We had a small technical hitch near the beginning that was resolved after a short delay. I thought the cursor that I could see on my screen was also visible on your picture. It was obviously not and that makes a nonsense of some of the...

Instructions for the new range of wagon transfers in 4mm
Attached are the instructions for the transfers. You will see that they are very comprehensive and identify the items needed for most Caley wagons and those suitable for kits from TLM and 51L. The manufacturers advice on their use and application is included. If you have used the transfers and can g...

Modelling Blairgowrie
I gave a Zoom presentation to the East of Scotland Finescale group on 'Blairgowrie Real and Imagined' last Tuesday, 13th July. For the uninitiated I have been building a model of Blairgowrie c.1906 for over 50 years and this presentation tells the story, the reasons why I embarked upon it and progre...

That is potentially very good news. Have you had sufficient interest to progress?
I mentioned possible 7mm wagons in my AGM report.

Re: CR 812 Class from Rails
That is a very useful photo Dave. Clearly the cab is wider than the splashers but for what reason? Could this be defined by the boiler size and construction rather than any aesthetic considerations? I don't think there is anything related to the underfarme, wheels and motion that would require the c...

Re: CR 812 Class from Rails
I have just had a look at the CAD pictures posted in September. I am not sure how accurate these are as a portrayal of the model as it will eventually appear but one thing does worry me. The outside faces of the splashers and the cab side do not appear to line up. Is this evidence that the splashers...

Re: LNWR Carriages
Please see my article "Tales from the Berry Town" TTL 141 for a reference to dual fitted Caley engines being sent to Blairgowrie for working English stock on fruit specials. More than likely this was LNWR stock and there is also a photo of LNWR vans being loaded at Auchterarder.

CR Permanent Way
Its not often we have a post on this subject but now I can offer something from a man who should know. I am working on transcribing the articles in the September 1907 issue of the Railway Magazine which celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of the Caledonian Railway. These will be published in The True Lin...

Wagon Brakes
There have been several discussions on the Forum about wagon brakes, the McIntosh Patent Brake and why the latter did not persist. The answers is simply that it did not comply with the recommendations of a committee set up in 1906 by the Board of Trade to consider the question of wagon brakes. The c...

Re: Unidentified Loco
The Railway Magazine of 1900 included an article titled "The End of a Locomotive" that included pictures of the breakers yard at St Rollox. I have attached these. 1901 also had a photo of a Conner single being broken up. These may be related to the photo that Niall has posted. Tony B Strip...

Re: TLM and 7mm
My turn to chip in again. By pattern or master I mean the item you wish to produce in quantity. For resin moulding the mould is cold poured silicon rubber. The pattern can therefore be made entirely of plastikard with strapping and bolt heads from the same material. All our 4mm patterns are made thi...

Re: TLM and 7mm
I am the person nominated by the CRA to coordinate TLM and it is time to get involved in this discussion. I have been asked many times over the years why we haven't extended the range to 7mm wagons. The answer is simple. Nobody has provided patterns for 7mm wagon bodies that can be used for resin ca...

Roofs for Carriages
This continues a discussion that started on the webinar on Saturday. Jim summers referred to my method of making removable plastikard roofs for the TLM D3 vans. This uses a 60 thou plastikard base that is a tight fit inside the body upon which is a longitudinal support for the roof. I have been usin...

Alba Models 4mm Etches
I have been talking to David Elvy of Alba Models about reintroducing the ex-Decent Models carriage kits in 4mm scale. As a first step he has recently received a large order of 4mm etches. He has no castings for these at present but is willing to sell the etches. He has: 4 wheel Drummond - Underframe...

I have had a couple of orders for TLM recently when people paid by Paypal as recommended but did not specify that the payment was for TLM. Re: CR Cattle Dock/Pens
Thanks Jim I think the level of interest would certainly justify us investing in a resin mould for the cattle pens. I guess 3D printing would be too expensive as a manufacturing method. The price for a resin mould and castings will depend on how big the pattern is. If it is about the size of the set...
