I distinctly remember that when the 2-4-2s were in operation the locomotive was always at the Lockerbie end of the train facing Lockerbie in both directions.

Brian, According to LMS ENGINE SHEDS Vols 4 (CR) and 7 (G&SWR) four L&NW 2-4-2 tank locomotives were transferred to the LMS Northern Division in about 1946.
