Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Hi Jim, You are very close! The three houses left are similar layout, the one on the right is reversed. So the chimney pots are 1.2/1.2/1.2/2.1 so each 3 chimney stack has 1 pot from one house and 2 from nextdoor, the four stack is two from one house and 2 from nextdoor again. It had me wondering un...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Good afternoon all, Just been having a wee play today. Progress on the cottages has been a bit slow for a while but an initial diorama view will hopefully spur things on a little. First shot of the whole block of four. One point of discussion has been the colour of the paintwork. I had always assume...

Re: Where is this, please?

Hello. It sure is a cracking shot, isnt it!! I will try and get a better scan done and repost it, the one above is the ebay low-res scan. Main reason for my purchase was the excellent view of Summit cottages, a rare one. Yes Ive visited both Summit and Harthope Viaduct several times over the last fe...

Re: Where is this, please?

Hello all, I have perused this photo for hours and would agree that this is a Northbound working at Beattock Summit for several reasons although there are one or two things which seemed odd to me at first. Assuming that the layout and lie of the land remained unaltered into BR days, the first of the...

Re: Good book

Ive never stumbled on the volume two either, despite extensive searches, so have assumed the same, never published. My favourite book was always Steam in Scotland from DC and WJVA 1968 but looking at the quality of this one rather knocks the other into second place, especially looking at the severe ...

Good book

Good evening, Picked up a copy of "A return ticket to Scotland" by Richard Coleman & Joe Racjzonek recently. Its not a title which would encourage my heather to set alight but if you haveny seen this volume, its a definite to go on the wants list for anyone with an interest in Scottish railways. 237...

Re: A74 Harthope Viaduct RTA

Morning, The A74 commemorative opening stone is still there, amazingly large, its a couple of hundred yards north of the site of the cottages now, presumably moved when the sub-station was built. Sadly the whole area of Coatsgate Layby has become a dumping ground, anything from vanloads of tyres to ...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Confession time. Im afraid I have cheated, see if you can spot it... Latest shot of the Harthope Staff Cottages, progressing well now. Much experimentation has been carried out windows wise and this is the result. Ive decided to install LED lighting, and maybe even a smoke generator although the pot...

Carluke Station

Good evening, Not sure if these will be of use to anyone, but I have a number of shots I took of Carluke Station and Signal Box taken in July 1971. Theres a booking office interior one and one other but sadly these are double exposures, but some details are quite discernible. Maybe the negatives sho...

Re: A74 Harthope Viaduct RTA

Many thanks to Paul Chancellor of Colour-Rail for allowing this crop of a Copyright photo to be posted on the Forum. The complete scene is available as a Modellers Scan # 392942 , search UK Steam, Beattock, loco 44902 banked by 76098. A fascinating scene, all sadly demolished, which is totally unrec...

Re: A74 Harthope Viaduct RTA

BEATTOCK COTTAGES GABLE 2 (2).jpg Hello Michael, Apologies for delay, The actual house numbers and street name have come from official BR plans, I assumed that they fitted in with the other houses, not that there were many, on the A74 road which was known as Carlisle Road at this point. As yet Ive ...

Re: A74 Harthope Viaduct RTA

From what I can tell by grossly zooming and enhancing the few shots, the block of 4 cottages certainly had small oval white presumably enamel plates. They had double front doors, hinged at both sides and closure together in the centre. The plates were mounted at the top of the right hand doors very ...

Have come across this on Sabre. So we need to take wellies, loppers and gloves again...... https://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32018 mentioning the moving of the stone. Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Hi Lindsay, One technical problem I have is uploading photos due to size restrictions. Even set on Low res, my pics seem to be far too big, and I find I have to take at a distance and crop, hence the appalling quality of my uploads. Is there a secret?? If using Windows 10, open the picture in Micro...

Re: A74 Harthope Viaduct RTA

I don't know if it's at all of interest but when I visited the site of the cottages a few years ago now, by driving down what had been the A74 but was now a dead-end lay-by, there in the bushes opposite the site of the cottages, was an engraved stone, looking for all the while as though it should h...

Re: A74 Harthope Viaduct RTA

Somewhere about 1964/65 I was driving my parent's car, a Ford Anglia, with vacuum operated wipers. in the dark, in the rain...…… up the A74; at the start of the roadworks we got confused, and drove for about 10 miles on the wrong side of the new dual carriageway. We had no problems and eventually m...

Hi Jim, Yes I know Harthope was right at limit of D&G boundary. Dumfries library have been extremely helpful and a nice box of Choccies is going to be heading that way next summer, havent been for years. Sadly with all the boundary changes it is now South Lanarkshire and I was told that some of the ...

A74 Harthope Viaduct RTA

Good evening, Does anyone know of any information about a triple fatal road accident which happened in 1955? Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Hi Lindsay, Many thanks for the further tips re the downspouts, I have quite a few sizes of brass and copper tubes and rodding, so have some experimenting to do.
