Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Morning, Unfortunately the windows are to scale and there doesny seem to be anything suitable on the market, hardly surprising. So either scratchbuilt or a commission, thanks for all the suggestions. This was yesterdays attempt at producing a frame using Plastruct Channel section 90531, starting wit...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

That's an ingenious method for windows Jim. I guess it's the same principle used with the Silhouette for styrene. This is the photo of the down-pipes IMG_4667.JPG It's more or less the same as Jim's method. The thin wire which is wrapped around the pipe wire needs to be quite soft so that it can be...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

This sounds very interesting, its something Ive thought about but no idea how to go about it. Would certainly take a lot of pressure off the eyes. Hi Paul, Here is a photo of the etch along with one soldered up, with another on edge to show the slots for the glazing, and one finished. windows forum...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Looking good Paul. How many dwellings are there? I can see 3 maybe 4 doors... Are you able to source windows the right size for your openings? There appears to be a number of suppliers who do casement style windows so you might be lucky (or did you very wisely design it to fit something already ava...

Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

A first look, getting close now, chimneys conquered using 2 sections of acrylic taper ear stretchers for each vented pot. A very hard material to work with and a small jig has been made to clamp and aid square and accurate length cutting with a razor saw. Thats the beauty of scratchbuilding. Get one...

Re: Caledonian Railway chimney pots

These are windscreen washer pipe connectors, theres thousands on ebay, but sellers tend to use generic images and not photos of the actual parts. But a good source for certain pots if you can find the one for you, and they come with a hole for the smoke!!

Re: Caledonian Railway chimney pots

Jim W beat me to it re Smart Models' chimney pots. I hadn't realised that the main part of your pot was also tapered, so my suggestion of the 'old style' biro tip wouldn't have worked. In any case I'm now of the opinion that these are as rare as the proverbial hen's teeth: the current type of cheap...

Re: Caledonian Railway chimney pots

I turned the ones for both my model of Rutherglen Weighs office and my Kirkallanmuir Weighs signal box http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/95081-kirkallanmuir/page-5#entry2970898 from styrene rod in a minidrill. Caledonian Railway chimney pots

Good afternoon, Further to the last post re CR chimney pots, one suggestion, windscreen washer pipe connectors, and one self-inspired, taper ear stretchers, have been investigated. The connectors were unsuitable for me, couldny find the right size or shape despite trawling through around 2000 listin...

Re: Colour scheme - Harthope Staff Cottages

Forgot to mention, Maquett do quite a range of profiles including graduated tubing where the ID of the next size up is the same as the OD of the first piece. Ie they slide over each other. This also was a possibility and shave the top piece down. Ive also a wee platelayers hut to make very similar t...

Re: Colour scheme - Harthope Staff Cottages

Hello Alan, Thanks for the suggestion and the encouragement too. Much appreciated. A lot has gone into the cottages to get so far, research as well as sourcing the right materials. Windows, doors and some chimney pots still to make, then finish off the painting. The chimney pots have been a big stum...

Colour scheme - Harthope Staff Cottages

P1960966 (8).JPG Good morning, This enquiry specifically relates to the Caledonian built Harthope staff cottages in BR days, sorry!, but I suspect this will be common to many staff and railway buildings. I wonder if anyone can help with the colours used for bargeboards, guttering, the underside of ...

Hello Jim, Problem solved. Theres a distant broadside shot on Railscot. The photographer has very kindly provided a high-res shot clearly indicating shape and size of portal. https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/26/635/ Thanks to all for input. Its saved another trip to Harthope, although I suspect that t...

Re: Harthope Viaduct occupation underpass

Hello Jim, Steam Days duly purchased, thanks for the nod. Would have bought this anyway for the content, but the question still remains. The Duchess on P31 is actually further north just around the corner on the extreme left of the double spread on P32/33. i think the area this side of the Duchess h...

Harthope Viaduct occupation underpass

Good evening, Can anyone help with a broadside photograph showing the shape and size of the opening and retaining walls of the occupation underpass just to the north of the staff cottages beside Harthope Viaduct on Beattock Bank? Or perhaps of any other similar underpass on the Caledonian section of...

Re: Bankfoot

Hi LA There is a 1958 Bankfoot shot in Steam in Scotland Vol 1, the one with the tartan cover, page 117 WJV Anderson. It shows the goods shed and the overlooking Bankfoot Church which very sadly burnt down in 2004. Somewhere, Ive seen a shot taken from this high vantage point looking the other way, ...
