Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

Thanks Jim, hopefully not long before some painting which will again change the appearance dramatically. Got the bay window roofs to do now, no measurements and its extremely difficult working with multiple angles. Trial and error with some card first. Photos are unreliable as not being perfectly sq...

Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

LOL, you should see me in full warcry. Twin Angelpoises, a set of Loupes and a bench that I can bring up to a couple of inches from the eyes! Oh and some Optrex.

Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

THE DREADED BAY WINDOWS! Afternoon all, I knew those pointy bay windows were going to be difficult as far as uniformity and sharpness of the 45° angle recessed window surrounds and the flat front face to the angle of the point reaching up to the almost Gothic but very graceful overhangs at the roof ...

Re: Dock Tank Deviations

Brilliant idea for the jig Alan. Ive made several jigs over the years for specific purposes and had one for a similar need to yours, my take was to use small blocks of brass of the necessary thickness soldered to a baseplate at the correct spacing, and a similar row at the other side. Speed was of t...

Re: Dock Tank Deviations

Beautiful work, Alan, and a couple of neat tricks. Wish you hadn't told me the correct number of bars, though. I have just counted the number on my model . . . . JimS Jim, I wouldny lose heart over this, and if you are thinking of altering to 8 bars, do some research first, they might not all be th...

Re: Dock Tank Deviations

Thats going to look fantastic when its done Alan, youve achieved some incredible detail there, and being in brass, I bet the finished loco will weigh some, with good adhesion and haulage. Ive never worked much in brass like this myself only odd little bits. Although strangely Ive just made a jig fro...

Re: The burning question

If it looks right, it's probably right. If that's the case, it will look OK to the casual observer. And if you're happy with it into the bargain, what more is there to worry about? Good to get on with something else, and trust that no-one comes up with proof to the contrary! I couldn't agree more, ...

Re: The burning question

I agree entirely with Lindsay's first paragraph. In the smaller scales you also have to consider the practicalities. There are times when you have to deviate from prototype dimensions simply in order to make the thing work. On the Jubilee pug I am currently building I've just had to rebuild the cab...

Re: The burning question

Harking back to Paul’s dilemma, as far as I’m concerned it’s down to whether I can live with an inaccuracy. Others may become aware of the inaccuracy, but that wouldn’t bother me so much - it really would be down to whether the inaccuracy is going to get to me each time I look at the model. Of cour...

Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

A wee progress update. All the stone parts for inset into the quoin stones have now been fashioned along with under-roof, all the roof parts and am on with the windows and doors at present. A shot of the Airfix kit and a shot to give an impression of how it will look. All the parts are rested in so ...

Re: The burning question

One problem is that a good model is assumed to be correct. Many years ago my father was modelling Aylesbury LNWR. The loco shed had been cut down in length in LMS days to seven bays with a roof tank on the end bay but one. An old Driver said that the water tank on the roof was originally in the cen...

I didn't have time to post this photo but it is the best one I have of the turntable at Blairgowrie and the only one of the water tower. Re: The burning question

Hi again Tony, The three buildings at Harthope were all totally different in style, the house red sandstone quoinstones and grey sandstone? walls I think, the block four totally red sandstone and the block two, furthest north, was totally red brick. This was built around the turn of the 20th century...

Re: Another burning question

The two copes on the right are the same distance apart as the two on the left, but because the outer one is further back, it creates the illusion that they are closer together. One of the reasons why photographs cannot be totally relied upon!! The "extension" is the hallway and stairwell. Have a loo...

Another burning question

Afternoon, The actual Harthope CR Dwelling House currently under construction was demolished sometime between 1957 and 1960. No full photos have come to light, only part photos. Much research and photography has been undertaken regarding the other CR ones as well as the L&C ones. Theres only one thi...

The burning question

Afternoon all. We are all Im sure in the same boat here, when modelling scenes from 100+ years past. The boat called The Line, that is the line between accuracy and educated calculation. Mine is sinking at the moment. Question, you spend years researching, photo finding, draw up what measurements an...

Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

Good afternoon all, Well, the basic shell of the CR dwelling house is virtually complete now, bar the pointy bay windows at the front. Still pondering over the MO on these. 24 days of virtual full-time work and over 500 applied quoin stones & sills so far! The window surroundss for the wee toilet bl...

I think the air cylinder was by the rear buffer beam; and you can just get a glimpde of the top corner of the cab ---- if you're quick!

Well spotted and abso correct. It think the narrow cab and bunker creates the illusion. Still a cracking clip.

Re: Banking in the Caledonian c1900

Hello Mike, Thanks for posting this and the link to the former discussion. It definitely appears to be a banking loco running backwards, a highly unusual and quite dangerous practice. Because of the incline, the firebox will be slightly higher than the boiler and greatly increasing the risk of uncov...
