Re: Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

Evening Allan, Many thanks for the link, it all sounds very interesting. Are the plastic envelopes acid free? Have the plans been scanned at all? Would be fascinated to see what you have, especially the Occupation underbridge, there was one north of the cottages and Coatsgate will be the Harthope on...

Re: Caledonian Railway Linemans House, Harthope

I am impressed too. Unfortunately I cannot help with a description of the lineside houses. The Directors seem to have referred to them as 'dwelling houses' or 'accommodation'. An expression such as 'lineman's house' implies a signal and telegraph lineman, and such staff would be the least likely to...

Re: Caledonian Railway Linemans House, Harthope

Thanks Allan, the red sandstone colour has been achieved by mixing various Model Color wargaming paints. Im still not totally happy with it as it looks very wishy-washy under certain light, it might be better once weathered although that has partly happened already just through handling. No I didnt ...

Caledonian Railway Dwelling House, Harthope

Good afternoon everyone, Thank goodness the serious modelling season is with us again. 🤪 Although there is still some work left to do on the block of four staff cottages - subject of previous post, and the block of two staff cottages is going to be completely replaced, warping, Ive been itching to g...

Re: Hector's Bridge

Hi Jim, Absolutely bob-on. I should have realised my link was the wrong bridge, looking at the layout of the water. Between the A74 dualling and the new M74, it would look as if most of the infrastructure around the line will be gone. Next time you are there, go down the truncated part of the A74 an...

Morning Jim, Thanks for the reply. You are right as regards the positioning of the name on the maps. And thank you for the reference to Benchmarks and Flush Brackets. Completely new to me, very interesting and will be studied further. The last comment on this Flickr photo https://www.flickr.com/phot...

Hector's Bridge

Good evening all, During my research into Harthope Viaduct, I have found reference to Hectors Bridge several times, but absolutely nothing as to Hector was. It is noted on NLS maps, 1955, as being the next bridge (over railway) north of the Viaduct itself, contrary to the excellent shot on Flickr wh...

Re: Banking at Beattock and Peaks.

Further thought, the Peak may have brought in a works train to Beattock from further south and wasny actually broken down, So maybe the headcode just happened to be on the back?? 1M24 did exist on the Midland mainline, but as far as I can tell, it was much further south, possibly Bradford, Sheffield...

Banking at Beattock and Peaks.

Good afternoon, Bought this photo at a swapmeet a few weeks ago. It is almost A2 size and very high quality. The seller said it was from the collection of a now defunct book publisher, no details on the rear. It is obviously post 1973, TOPS, and Train Reporting Numbers were abandonned in 1976. So 19...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

I'm fascinated by the different colours on the four doors of the middens: are we to assume each cottage had a different colour to ensure the tenants knew which was theirs? And did these different colours apply to the doors of each cottage as well? You would never have guessed about polychromatic mi...

I wonder if its available on DVD? But fancy cutting the film off there! Maybe its been edited, research needed! Many thanks Paul.

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

From South Africa of all places. Theres a terrific amount of info, both new and in confirmation, within this slide and being in ...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Theres one thing Im still curious about although of no consequence to the model. Each cottage has a single vented pot at one side and two octagonal ones at the other. The single stacks were the main room and kitchen fireplaces but why vented? To aid drafting maybe but why? Any ideas?? I can remembe...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Nobody yet has answered the question....why are the chimney pots arranged 1.3.3.4.1 ?? 🤪🤪 I would guess that it is because of the arrangement of the rooms with fireplaces. The gable ends have one fireplace, the two right hand houses each have two rooms with fireplaces adjoining the party wall and t...

Hello Jim, This is a shot on Railscot showing similar tenements in background in the correct position. They are quite distinctive in the 55189 shot with the chimney stack parallel to the road, and some "T" shaped too. https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/32/354/ The current view of Dalry Road shows even b...

Hello Michael, Many thanks for thinking of my project and getting in touch. All suggestions are very weclome! Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Morning Bill, No, the layby is the original A74, it was simply truncated. The new dual carriageway went straight through the viaduct and curved off much more gently. At one time, fairly recently, you could still see the old ribbed kerb stones and the drop kerb in front of the site of the cottages bu...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Yes Im afraid I feel a bit guilty building this in BR days but its what I grew up with, know and love. The Settle & Carlisle is also a classic one where the BR manager employed to oversee the rundown actually did engage and reversed the decision. BR is not all bad, many successes not least the huge ...

Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Hello Graham, Absolutely right, and in this case although 3 are supposedly identical bar the front gable and the 4th a mirror image, theres considerable differences in the measurements and positioning of windows etc. All faithfully produced. Its puzzled me somewhat as to why these were demolished c1...
