Re: Caledonian Railway staff cottages, Harthope

Just because houses look the same on the outside, it would be a mistake to assume they are the same inside. I live in a row of Victorian terraces which all look the same at the front but are radically different inside, especially as they approach the corner and get narrower front to back. Lovely mod...

outside w irons

H folks, I have a set of outside W irons and some axle boxes and springs in 00. How should I mount the axle boxes? Should I cut them in half (or what proportion) and use part inside and part outside said W iron? Help please? Graham

Re: Class 55 drawings

I would attach scans of the MRN drawings if I could get it onto the small pixel range allowed. If you PM me with an email address, I'll send them. I find they vary quite a lot from the ones I must have used to build mine in the early 1970s. I haven't got them any more as my modelling gear was stolen...

black livery engines

How far did black engines get the clean treatment in CR days? If they were cleaned, should one use a satin varnish to reflect the oily rag treatment? And did the back of the bunker have lining and a numeral?

Re: Old Buffers and Oil Lamp Housings

I must thank Dave L publicly for his kind offer. I still haven't come across any sources of buffers. Seems that resin items that small aren't really an option. Have yet to hear back from Dave Franks of LMS. Regarding the Ambis etch mentioned, I picked one of these up at the weekend for examination,...

Re: Wagon Tarpaulins part 1

Good work! I have found it helpful to stick thread (must try your thinner stuff) down with Wilko's Evostick equivalent across the reverse side, like a Saltire with an added vertical, so that it isn't pulling against the material at the corners. I have simply wet the commercial paper tarpaulins, crin...

Re: TLM Diagram 11A Covered Carriage Truck

I have started assembling one of Tony's excellent kits. The instructions provided elsewhere on this site are very helpful. One thing that has dogged me a little at first is the removal of the web of resin from the window to create a clear space for glazing. I am going for two clear lights each side....

Re: 125 class Dundee Bogie

Yes, it's identical, thanks. I hadn't thought that they were levers but that makes sense. Would the following be good for the brake levers and shoes? I noticed them today while all the others I've seen have straight bars. http://www.roxeymouldings.co.uk/product/478/4a125-secr-loco-springs-brake-fitt...

Re: 125 class Dundee Bogie

Has anyone any idea of the form of the braking mechanism between the driving wheels? The drawing is not very helpful. There is obviously a hydraulic system pushing the two brakes outwards onto the tyres but from where do the brakes hang and are the hydraulics round? Is there a fulcrum somewhere low ...

Brake van colours in the verandah

Dear Experts out there,
Please has anyone reliable information on the colours of the inside walls in the verandahs of the four wheeled (Caley Coaches kit) brake vans. I've scanned the wagon book to no avail.
Thanks in anticipation, Graham

Thanks, Mike. So it is. I wonder why I hadn't spotted the similarity. It's a 6 wheeler too which will give me an excuse to try a Cleminson truck. It's a pity I didn't paint the other side in my youth! Best wishes, Graham

IMG_5673 (2).jpg IMG_5673.JPG Dear friends, I wonder if any of you can help me identify this piece of NPCS and how I can get a picture or drawing so that I can finish it off. I made it thus far in 1971-2 before a move to Zambia stopped my modelling in its tracks, so to speak. It has louvres in the ...

Paint for coaches

I have dug out some old coaches I painted and notice, again, that the Precision Paints P434 paint I bought recently is much too red. Could anyone give me a paint colour (brand and number?) that would be more like the browner paint I used 40 years ago and, I suppose, the same colour as the Coaches bo...

Re: Conner No. 1 class information please

Hi Steve, I got the single slide bar and crosshead to suit from Markits and they worked fine for my 179 after a bit of juggling to get everything parallel. I hadn't expected the piston rod to include its own channel for inside the cylinder but was glad that it did. I suspect you are probably right a...
