In the train formations they talk about a leader. What was this?

Pages 124 - 126 of 'Operating the Caledonian Railway Volume One' explain the concept and how it was worked in practice.
Basically, it 'led' the formation with the intention of protecting passengers.

Thanks Jim, so was it an empty carriage or a break?

Either.
There was a concession as to how much of a passenger vehicle was locked off, if you simply had to use it.
I outline in the book the machinations such as splitting specials at Carstairs, and other odd workings in consequence.

Thanks Jim, finding it a bit difficult to pop out to the bookshop at the moment. Stay safe!
