Ulysses S Grant's trip around Scotland

Post by fordyce »

Other from Wikipedia, does anyone know where's there's detailed information about the UK trip of the US President in 1877? He arrived in Glasgow having 'done' the Far North of the Highland Railway by train, as far as Thurso, and having been given the freedom of Inverness, was also granted the freedom of Glasgow on 13th Sep 1877.

The only thing I know about this, Howard, was that Grant inspected the first Tay Bridge just before its opening and made the perceptive remark that it was a big bridge. I'm sure that the details of his trip were well documented at the time.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've been made aware of a tome entitled Grant's Tour Around The World by J F Packard, Philadelphia, 1880 - 800+ pages yet his entire trip from Dundee to Thurso and back to Glasgow is dismissed with the merest generic whisper of no more than the two words "Northern Scotland". There is a bit more coverage of the Tay Bridge visit. Apparently newspaper reports abound, but this semi-official book of 41 chapters is not exactly an in-depth account - although, e.g., we are told that "At Amiens General Grant quietly partook of a dish of consommé". But as for his journey through northern Scotland - zilch!

He apparently concluded his European trip with a visit to Dundee (you always keep the best bits until last). The late Michael Marra sang about it:

The Scottish Local History Forum published a four page article on Grant's visit to Scotland - issue 87, pp. 41-4. It's available on the website as a back number for £6.00
