Unidentified 2-4-0

Post by Niall Ferguson »

I am in the process of cataloguing about 850 Caley locomotive photos for the HMRS. Most are well known although a few are new to me. This one where nothing is on the back and I presume 2829 on the front is an L&GRP number as it is an F Moore photo. I can't read the buffer beam number accurately - I would guess 259 or 256 but can anyone help also the location?

I read it as 239, which would make it one of the Dübs built 583 Class 2-4-0s, according to the Loco Register in David Hamilton's book. It also states that Nos.254-262 were used for renumbering, but I haven't trawled through that column to find what locos were given the two numbers you suggest.

I can feel another question and offshoot thread coming along - Where is the location? That should keep folks occupied during the lockdowns!
