498 Class help

Post by Alan K » Sun Aug 04, 2019 5:23 pm

Hi all
I'm currently building one of these dock tanks from a Caley Coaches kit and there's a bit of detail that I'm trying to find. Under the front buffer beam, there are openings in the front stretcher which I think are access points to the ends of the Stephenson motion on each side. They are actually represented on the etch for the kit's front stretcher, but for some reason are absent from the drawing supplied with the kit. There are quite a few good detailed photographs of these engines around, especially from the LMS period and later, but tantalisingly that particular part is usually in shadow. From the glimpses I get, it looks like what you can see is end cap discs with a centre 'dome', not unlike the end cap on the outside cylinders. Does anyone know of any picture or drawing which gives more detail?
I've been looking at the pdf's of the CRA photos. They don't show much detail, but I thought that perhaps number 04009 from CRA7_1_3_05 and 02468 from CRA07_1_3_13 might just give what I'm looking for - would anyone who has access to the 'full' version of these pictures be able to post a close-up of just that part please? I want to be able to make a cosmetic representation of what can be seen through the openings... Not, I hasten to add, that I'm at that stage yet - I haven't got the wheels on yet!!

I am enclosing a few photographs as requested regarding the Class 498 0-6-0T.
There was an Interesting article under "Modelling Q & A" titled "498 Class wheel details" which developed into a more detailed theme on these Locomotives which should be of Interest if you havn't already discovered it.

Here is a close up of CR No. 510 which was in the original Forum Discussion - "498 Class wheel details".

Alan
Could I suggest that you contact Donald Peddie to see if he can help?
You will find his contact details in the list of Committee members etc in TTL. Please use his personal email address.

There is a drawing of the cylinders and valve chests in the Campbell Cornwell collection. I have it as CRA6/1/3/2/42/1/3 although I can't seem to access the archive at the moment to double check. It is the fully detailed works drawing, so plenty of detail of the valve chests which would be immediately behind those openings.

Thank you David for that prompt response. I think that the picture of 16160 is photo 04009 in the archive and that of 532 is 02468. These are certainly of interest but they don't show any more detail than some of the other pictures I've seen from other sources, so it looks as though the CRA photo archive doesn't have what I was hoping for. Thanks for the heads-up about the drawings from the Campbell Cornwell collection Jim - I think this is my next port of call. But I have found the same as you - I can't get anything more than the heading. From what you have said I'm assuming that you have been able to access these before. Does anyone know why the link does not lead to anything more than a heading? Incidentally, there is a spelling error in the Archive text:: it should be "Cornwell" and not "Cornwall"!!

Alan,
I am not sure why that reference is not opening up, but will check with our industrious webmaster.

However, below is the list for the 498 class.
