Aberdeen Joint Station exhibition of rolling stock, 1936

Post by Mike@61B »

I am trying to find a list of locomotives which were exhibited at Aberdeen Joint Stn on a couple of wet days in Nov 1936. I know there was a P2 and an A4 ("Silver Link"), and also the LMS Turbomotive (6202), but not sure as to the others. Can anyone help please.....

From The Railway Observer December 1936.

"ABERDEEN EXHIBITION- A railway exhibition in aid of the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary Building Fund was held on Saturday and Sunday 14/15th November,at the Joint Station. Both L.M.S. and L.N.E. companies contributed lavishly, and the success of the exhibition can be well judged by the fact that £200 was raised. There were ten locomotives : L.M.S. Turbine 6202, 6170 British Legion, 5XP 5645, Jones Goods HR No.103, Caley Single No.123. L.N.E.R. A3 2795 Call Boy, P2 2001 Cock o' the North, J36 9661 Ole Bill, 04 6290, and streamlined A4 Silver Link. Several interesting coaches, e.g. Observation Car Maid of Morven were included in the exhibits which totalled 36."

I am quite struck by what a splendid show this must have been, with great variety and no expense spared.
When companies today are keen to show what they do for the community, these old railway companies were clearly more involved with the community than we might have thought. Mind you, the LMS would not have wished to be out-done by the LNER and vice-versa.

Sandy Murdoch took a few photographs at the exhibition - early efforts on a poor camera in pouring rain. Search for Location = Aberdeen and Photographer = Murdoch on the FSLS database. The captions are temporary ones.
