Arniston coal company wagon livery

Post by jimwatt2mm »

Strictly not CR, but the question has been raised on RMWeb as to the colour of Arniston Coal Coy. wagons. Being in NB territory I'm guessing grey, but any info either confirming of contradicting this would be welcome.

I have a colour photo of Arniston 515 12t taken many years ago where the livery is (well faded) red oxide, letter white shaded black. I think this wagon is at Prestongrange.

The local model shop did an 00 model 617 of a 7 plank wagon with the same colours.

Science Museum list a model of 910 made in 1958 amongst its items but no details of colour.

However Robbies Wagons did models in a grey with differing lettering styles

13 and 138. Grey with white shaded black
927 Grey with white shaded black
(I have previously found that the Robbies models can contain errors)

David Blevins wrote a piece on wagons in the North British Study Group Journal Number 11 page 7 and Arniston is mentioned there.

I think he was also the author of an extract from the Pickering order book which reads:-

[ARNISTON COAL Co., Ltd. Gorebridge. Brown Oxide, white lettering with black shading. And ironwork. Some wagons without shading,
1 coat of Tar inside. 1901, 1904, 1905, 1907.[/color]

Hopes this may help but no doubt others better versed than I may have additional information.

Is the 'coat of tar inside' standard for coal PO wagons? Graham

No, Graham, but it was frequent according to the RYP order books. Another options was lead colour. This was applied to the CR Diagram 59 wagons as a base coat outside, plus one coat inside.
