Carriage stock converted into vehicle/motor car carriers

Post by caleyJim »

Wearing my LMS Society hat, we have just received this enquiry ;

"Hello, I am looking through my collection of Midland/LMS books. A friend of mine has asked me if I know of any records or photographs of pre-grouping carriage stock converted into vehicle/motor car carriers. Can someone suggest an info' source?"

Not something I'm aware of. Anyone got any thoughts?

The Lancashire and Yorkshire converted quite a few 6 wheel coaches (mainly brake thirds I think) into covered carriage trucks and aeroplane vans.

Many thanks for that. Following your lead I asked Noel Coates, a fellow member of the LMS Society, who is very knowledgeable on the L&Y. He gave me chapter and verse on these vans. I'm hesitant to post here as it is a bit off-topic but can PM (or post if folks are OK with it). Synopsis is contained in Peter Tatlow's book 'Historic Carriage Drawings Vol 3 NPCS' (Pendragon, York, 2000 ISBN 1 899816 09 7) and I append the relevant page.
