Greenock Central overall roof

Post by Violets49 »

With reference to the discussion today regarding the overall roof at Greenock Central. I found this pic in Britain from the air. Unfortunately the image was reversed but I have switched it. It clearly shows at bottom right, the overall roof on greenock central station.

Jane - thanks for posting this, following our discussion at the Glasgow meeting on Saturday.

As I mentioned, I have never seen a photo of the entire overall roof (as extending to the ends of the stone flanking walls which end in turrets, and which still exist). I upload OS plans of the station dated 1896, 1912 and 1938, onto which I have added a red dotted line which approximates to the ends of these walls. You'll see that the 1896 and 1912 plans show an overall roof, whereas the 1938 plan shows the through tracks and the dock track being unroofed. I had always assumed that the overall roof was a wartime casualty, but this suggests that roof alterations were carried out pre-war.

Just noticed that my red dotted line on the 1938 plan is at the end of the roofs at that time, which you will see is not as far out as the equivalent line on the 1896 and 1912 plans. This leads me to suggest that the roof shown on the 1896 and 1912 plans had been taken down by then (at least at this end of the station).

This photo shows an overall roof which covers the through lines (i.e. as per my 1896 and 1912 plans, and not a shown on Jane's photo and the 1938 plan. I don't have a date for the photo.

Something wich may be of interest. The 'Inverclyde Heritage' web page recently posted a series of photos which seem to show the overall roof being dismantled Presumably after the bombing raids of May 1941

Hello Jane,

I have visited the website but couldn't find the photos. It seems quite difficult to use. Could you insert a link to them?

Thanks,

John

Hello John
Sorry for taking so long to respond. I'll see what I can do. I am on their Facebook page and the photos were published on there.
Jane.
