Coal & Oil Store
In Journal 149 at page 20, there are plans and elevations of the Coal and Oil Store at Denny Station.
I have four questions.
1) Why would two unequal width coal stores be necessary ? The total floor area of the larger could possibly accommodate 8- 10 tons of coal with about 5 tons or so in the smaller.
2) Is it likely that each would be further sub-divided with a " coal hole or holes" so that the coal could be shovelled into buckets for distribution around the various station fires.
3) The oil store is quite large. Why ?
4) The oil store appears to have a fire. Could this be required to keep the oil viscosity low ?
Any aspect related to the structures and equipment on the Caledonian Railway Company.
