Hi everyone,

Barrhead and East Kilbride branches: electrification work.

Work has now commenced with the drilling of holes and the construction of catenary masts for the Barrhead and East Kilbride branch electrification work. However, at three former Caledonian stations on the line to EK – Giffnock, Clarkston and Busby – three examples of cross-lattice footbridges still stand, whilst between Darnley Road and Moray Place in Strathbungo there is a small example of a cross-lattice footbridge spanning the running roads. There is also an example of a former Caledonian honey/light grey sandstone goods shed still standing and remaining in business use at Busby to this day.

It may be an idea for those enthusiasts who wish to record the items above, then a trip down the line should be arranged prior to everything be altered by the catenary masts.

‘National Records of Scotland’, Edinburgh, and under ref. BR/LMS/4/244 there is :

‘Scottish Division - Central District – programme for renewal of Busby and East Kilbride branch.’

The above material is certainly worthy of review and study, and your contributor plans to do so once the restrictions caused by the pandemic have been lifted and ‘normal service resumes at ‘NRS’, Edinburgh.

Also worthy of study are the various photographs and O.S. maps evident on the 'RailScot' web-site surveying the stations on the line to East Kilbride.

I recently took an assortment of colour images of the B&W painted footbridge at Strathbungo, but, sad to say, its size at 3-59MBt is too large to upload here. However, I have some colour images of the three SPTE/ScotRail crimson liveried footbridges from, so will submit same for possible use within 'TTL'.

Good hunting!!
