4mm kit/RTR model of Caley 439 class?

Post by [email protected] »

I am building up my stud of locos seen at Aberdeen Ferryhill during the 1950's/early 60's ...would love to be able to add a 439.
Any interest from the RTR boys for such a model? The 439 was a stunning looking loco (just in the middle of reading the 419 story recently published)..surely a candidate for a model??

DJH do a 439 kit - https://www.djhmodelloco.co.uk/prodpage ... uctid=3055

It's not entirely accurate, but it gives a pretty good impression of the class and I think I'm right in saying that as things currently stand it appears to be all that is available in 4mm. The 439 class is however listed in the current BRM 00 wishlist poll - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... w/viewform - it is suggested that this carries some weight with manufacturuers, so you could cast a vote for the 439. I think I'm right in saying that it has appeared reasonably high in previous wishlist polls, but obviously not high enough.

I have recently suggested this to a manufacturer of limited edition body kits to fit proprietary chassis & he appears genuinely interested.

I remember Ronnie Cockburn started a small wave of mock 439s in the 70s by converting a Triang M7. It was quite convincing. Maybe something similar can be done with the Hornby M7 available today? Alisdair

Ronnie had an article on this published in, perhaps, Railway Modeller.
I have seen a copy but do not have the date.
It surprises me that, apart from the DJH kit, a model has not been produced as the locomotives were ubiquitous, lasting well into BR days.
In my view, it would be much better to have an accurate body, perhaps 3D printed, than carry out a conversion.
