7mm scale 171 Class

Post by David Elvy » Fri Apr 17, 2015 9:28 am

Can anyone who has built a 7mm scale 171 Class please advise from where you obtained the 2'6" solid wheels, slaters don't appear to stock anything?

7mm Scale 171 Class Bogie Wheels

Post by David Elvy » Sun Jan 20, 2019 9:51 pm

With the imminent reintroduction of the etches in 4mm and 7mm scale the question is as relevant today as it was when I started my build in 2015, any advice regarding the bogie wheels would be appreciated, thanks?

Hi David,

Couldn't you have waited a few weeks and I'd have offered you an option via my thread on building a 171?!? However, since you've raised the matter, here's one possible solution for you :

For the 171 in 4mm there are no solid 2' 6" wheels on the market. I received 2 pairs of wheels with my etch which were Sharman wheels but they are no longer manufactured. The nearest size of wheel that I could find was for Lowmacs which are 2' 7½" disc wheels with a couple of holes in them - Alan Gibson Workshop stock them. See the image below :

In 4mm, there should only be .5mm difference which I'd be happy to go for if I didn't have anything else to hand. The difference looks a lot greater in the image as the Sharman wheels are actually undersized. I only measured them when I saw the difference compared to the Lowmacs and they are under 10mm - I'll have to put that down to in-service tyre wear. Seems that no-one may have a spot on model!! The profile is slightly different between these 2 wheel sets but the Gibson wheels are actually closer to the prototype. The inner axle diameter is better as is the raised profile immediately around it. However, when it comes to the comparison with the profile of prototype examples, whose to say what is correct? Check out these 2 on the same bogie :

Alan Gibson Workshop also do Lowmacs in 7mm, so if you are interested check them out.

Cheers,

Lindsay

Popped up to the workshop this evening and couldn't resist some testing https://youtu.be/XGSY4vc9k-w I know the model could do with either re-lining or heavy weathering but with everything else on the to do list that's somewhere near the bottom of the list.

Some goods news, Walsall Model Industries are now making the 2’ 6” wheels in 7mm scale for the 171 class, the first ones should hopefully be with me in the next 10 days, i’ll update folk with a photo once they arrive.
