The Montrose & Bervie Railway

The Montrose & Bervie Railway - a study of transport in South-East Kincardineshire 1770-1996:, published jointly by the Caledonian Railway Association and Lightmoor Press, tells the story of the picturesque railway branch from Montrose to Inverbervie, which opened in 1865 and closed completely in 1966. It was built by the principal landowners of the area and operated by the Caledonian Railway until sold to the North British Railway in 1881.

This new, detailed and fully researched study, using original documents ans contemporary newspapers, charts the history of the line against the backdrop of the progress of the South-East Kincardineshire economy and the landed interests which controlled it. In addition, the book covers the earlier development of the turnpike in the same area, also operated by local landowners.

Eleven appendices give full details of the stations, structures, operations, signalling and many other aspects of the railway. The text is illustrated by over 170 illustrations, many in colour.

The book is available by Mail Order, from the CRA Stand at Exhibitions and at our Glasgow meetings.
